    Focal BathysFocal Bathys

    Focal Bathys

What a statement Bluetooth like Bathys Dune is. Through it Focal invites anyone, to listen anywhere. In clear and obvious style. Focal's trademark M-shaped aluminium-magnesium dynamic driver brings you flagship sound on the go. 5 ⭐ came from What Hi-Fi? because "the success of Focal's first effort" isn't surprising. Headfonics say Bathys "represents a serious upgrade on consumer headphone choices from the likes of Sony and Bose", something Digital Trends second.  Wired writes Bathys is Bluetooth "even staunch audio nerds can enjoy". Superb acoustics on the part of Focal's know-how are a given, and the warm, rich and detailed fidelity of Bathys breaks new ground for a portable headphone of its size – wired or unwired. However, what makes Bathys truly compelling is its range of noise cancelling, Bluetooth 5.1, Qualcomm® aptX™ Adaptive and app-controlled EQ. [See Product Desc. For More] Its name comes from the French word ‘bathyscaphe’, the first submarine exploration vehicle. And Bathys is the embodiment of calm, depth and absolute silence. It's already scooped up TechHive's Editors Choice award, and is ecoustics' favourite noise-cancelling headphone for 2022. Audioholics says Bathys "takes its place among the top sound quality-focused wireless headphones available", and gave it a Product of the Year award. Stuff slapped 5 ⭐ on this Bluetooth beast too. Audiophile-Heaven lauds Bathys. At the cutting edge of tech, but dressed up in finery as a finished product like only Focal can. Blurring the lines between lifestyle and audiophilia has become typical from France's masters of savoir faire. Bathys is proof that Focal has mastered that.  The Bathys design comes inherited from Focal’s open and closed-back audiophile headphones such as Clear MG and Radiance. The earcup grilles repeat Focal’s design language, highly aesthetic curves drawing attention to the company's prestigious logo symbolising style, luxury and belief in better. A white back-lit system beneath the logo may be activated if desired, for an understated, chic effect. Another standout feature of Bathys is its elegant and timeless black-silver colourway, for effortless sophistication. Indeed, this wireless Focal is something you want to be seen with, but also to hear. The comparisons to its bigger audiophile siblings visually are apt, but so are they sonically. Bathys promises a big chunk of Focal fidelity on the move, its M-shaped aluminium-magnesium drivers among the most audiophile-grade mounted in a wireless headphone before.  This driver's stiffness, light weight and damping not only promises you a warm, immersive and authoritative presentation of music in stock tuning. It's also fine ground for EQ to be implemented – and Bathys comes together with EQ pre-sets for listeners to select via the Focal & Naim control app for iOS and Android. Not only does Bathys sound excellent – it can be made yours truly, too, when you select your favourite sound signature.  aptX™ Adaptive ensures wireless transmission stability in most conditions.  Focal added a Silent mode of cancellation optimised for trips with high background noise but let's you switch to a Soft mode to aid concentration at work, while Transparency mode enables you to stay connected to your surroundings. And a USB-C cable gives you the listener the final ability to access Bathys' 24/192 DAC via a computer or phone, when seeking uncompromised fidelity. The sense of completeness in Bathys' package promises that form and function have truly met. Despite its humble entry into the world of Focal, Bathys is in fact one of Focal's proudest Head-Fi releases. And there is much more to explore from Focal for those seeking ever-greater levels of wired sound quality here, and you can also browse all of our Bluetooth headphones here.

    ZMF Headphones Verite Closed

Managing the complicated acoustic design for the Vérité driver in a closed-back headphone may have been ZMF Headphones' toughest challenge to date. But the way they pulled it off with aplomb would have given little hint to that. Expect nearly all the Vérité's beryllium-coated transparency and detail in this closed model, with the benefits of privacy and isolation to boot. Positive Feedback were rendered "speechless at how you achieved the performance you achieved with these". [See Product Desc. For More] Its driver starts with a sandwich driver core of softer plastic PEN for effective damping at higher frequencies, this surface being coated with beryllium for the metal's stiffness, lightness and air acceleration properties.  That means Vérité Closed's driver moves as a perfect piston over all frequencies up to and above its working range, keeping distortion down due to cone and modal break-up. Audiophile Style compared the closed version against its open brethren, publishing a comprehensive study complete with measurements to conclude "they're as good as anything on the market today" and what "ZMF have achieved with the Vérité is truly remarkable". Stereophile's Herb Reichert says the "Vérités come closer to [Sony's] MDR-R10s in basic sonic character than any other headphones I've auditioned ... may even exceed Sony's cult classics in their illusion of speed and transparency". It's rightfully Headfonia's "best-of-the-best in the closed-back world". Make the headphone that made Stereophile's shortlist of Headphone Product of the Year 2020 yours today. Hifiman Sundara Closed

If there was one headphone that could give you a helping of the entire HIFIMAN experience, it would be Sundara. And the next generation Sundara Closed means you can take that enjoyment anywhere with you. It's the quintessential HIFIMAN experience, on top of being one of the most important planar-magnetic headphones to surface in the last decade. "Incredible bass and exciting mids" were the highlight for Ear Fidelity. Headfonics says it's a different perspective of the Sundara legend. "They’re great for picking apart all the little details of recordings (but) don’t sound too bright" says SoundStage! Solo. With its closed beechwood cups for isolation in noisy environments, and Stealth Magnet technology, Sundara Closed is about to carve a niche of its own as one of the most versatile. [See Product Desc. For More] Tuning closely mirrors the original open but fidelity has stepped up. Dynamics crash harder under greater magnetic flux, soundstage expands forwards and mids are just a smidgen more present, via Questyle Audio's M12. Sundara's significance has been cemented thanks to its micron level NEO supernano Diaphragm, for excellent accuracy in the mids and treble. Keeping its large driver under control is no problem for HIFIMAN's double-sided planar-magnetic array. Just that alone wouldn't ensure a completely low-distortion affair, though. HIFIMAN's Stealth Magnet technology shows up here, with a magnet array that claims to be acoustically transparent. Stealth Magnets allow soundwaves to propagate towards your ear with minimal diffraction and turbulent interaction with the surrounding structure.  Sundara Closed's driver meanwhile is the usual low mass allowing for HIFIMAN to produce lightning-quick reaction times and transients. Reproduction of detail and soundstage is never sacrificed, even behind closed backs. Milk all that there is from Sundara Closed on the go and in the office by ensuring it is properly driven by Questyle's M12 and CMA18P current-mode amplifiers; the latter together with iBasso Audio's 4.4mm CB17 or the Nobunaga Labs Advance TPC. Bose QC45

Hear the power of Bose's next-gen QuietComfort® 45 headphones, now with a best-in-class combination of noise cancelling performance and premium comfort, plus proprietary acoustic technology for deep, clear audio. CNET loved what they heard. QC45 comes with exclusive Bose technologies, like TriPort acoustic architecture and volume-optimised Active EQ, to produce everything in high fidelity. The proprietary TriPort design vents the earcups to add depth and fullness — all without increasing their size. [See Product Desc. For More] So you get better sound from this featherweight QC45 that's smaller, lighter, and more comfortable. Plus, volume-optimised Active EQ boosts highs and lows to maintain the same high-fidelity performance no matter how loud or soft you listen. Bass stays consistent when you turn down the volume and the music is still clear when you turn it up. That's all configurable via the Bose Music app, which works alongside six tiny microphones hidden in the earcups to continuously measure, compare, and react to outside noise. That noise is then cancelled with an opposite signal, resulting in fewer distractions – and more of your music. Use the button on QC45's left earcup to choose from Quiet Mode for full noise cancelling, or Aware Mode to let in some of your surroundings. Up to 24 hours of battery life on a single charge means you'll be tuned into your audio for longer. And a glass-filled nylon plus custom cast metal build means your Bose survives the elements longer. ZMF Headphones BokehZMF Headphones Bokeh

    ZMF Headphones Bokeh

This is the closed-back headphone from ZMF Headphones that everyone's been dreaming of. Bokeh is the first closed-back ZMF that can claim to be truly portable, with its isolation brought on the go with you in backpacks to offices and hotel rooms. It's the same ZMF quality and promise of durability sans unwieldy storage case. With customary lifetime ZMF driver warranty especially important as Bokeh gets put about the rigours of daily life, this is a build and tuning that will stand the test of time. Brought to a new and affordable price point, the Bokeh is just the latest ZMF that stands to become a classic, bringing their cherished house sound with you on the go whether via USB dongle DAC/amp, music player or small desktop amp. [See Product Desc. For More] A natural step up from Tago Studio's T3-01 that traverses the bus then the desk, the Bokeh combines ergonomic portability with ZMF's traditional ability to scale from sound quality. ZMF's new entry-level is greater than the sum of its parts.  A new 80ohm Liquid Crystal Polymer driver is pushed to its acoustic limits with proprietary ZMF work, in their patented Atrium Damping System (ADS) first found in the flagship Atrium. All this tuning potential in earcup acoustics extends to Bokeh's owners with new Caldera earpads useful add-on options. Caldera pads bear a special fluted, tapered, horn-shaped design that take on the form of acoustic amplifiers. Leather or suede directly contribute to which frequencies you choose to enhance, making Bokeh such a pleasure because ADS makes it so versatile. Bokeh grants ZMF full control over a soundscape, with internal cavity design challenging the physical limits of linear full-range reproduction in closed-backs like never before. Acoustic dampers work closely together with driver mounting position for optimal diffusion effects, allowing ZMF to introduce greater perceived soundstage width and depth.  An incredible amount of fine-tuning took place selecting distances within the cup and damping material for optimal airflow, a five-year research and development process before ZMF deemed Bokeh ready to release to the public. Brought to a new point of cost-effectiveness is an 80ohm LCP driver that is the beating heart of Bokeh. It's a load that's simultaneously easy to drive for any partnering amplifier – such that a studio console, mixer or tube amplifier with varying output impedance mates comfortably with suitable damping factor. Apart from frequency response being less prone to variation from impedance mismatch, Bokeh's easy load means many modern bridge-tied load outputs on music players won't grind their gears pushing into inordinately low impedances – small power supplies and output stages producing less in the way of distortion and noise as a result. Bokeh will make for a happy result running from iBasso Audio's DC06 Pro, DC Elite and DX170, but high output impedance, imperfect voltage sources from FiiO and Shanling will not be tested untowardly either – music players from the latter both having enough mettle to push this ZMF very satisfactorily.  Settling down from its travels at its natural habitat that is the desk, Bokeh will continue to display sound that belies its cost, scaling into small desktop amps from iFi Audio and HIFIMAN.  It's this versatility that really elevates Bokeh beyond the generic releases that otherwise dominates the mainstream. Fostex TH900 Mk2

A modern classic. Fostex distinguished themselves at the top of the luxury headphones list with TH900 and continue to do so – a pinnacle of sound quality, design and handcrafted build quality.  Whether in striking stock Bordeaux Red, or limited-editions Pearl White and Brilliant Purple, TH900s are instantly recognisable for their hand-applied Urushi lacquer finish. [See Product Desc. For More] This traditional Japanese art form undertaken by the Sa-kamoto Urushi Factory established over 100 years ago earmarks this Fostex flagship as a heirloom to be passed down for generations. Urushi applied over closed-back Japanese Cherry Birch cups allows Fostex to showcase the significance of each TH900, hand-built in Japan. Such allure and prestige invites us to put these featherweight and light-clamp headphones on, to be totally immersed in the incredible sound they produce. TH900 debunks so many myths about closed-back headphones. There is nothing small about the way this Fostex stages, its larger-than-life personality projecting sonic images and soundstage far beyond the confines of its wooden cups. Centre-image and depth are produced especially realistically. These have to be heard to be believed. TH900 grabs you and shakes you in one massive dynamic movement, also thanks to its 50mm driver that moves plenty of air. Made of Fostex's famous Biodyna biocellulose material and guaranteed huge excursion by a 1.5 tesla magnetic circuit, TH900 effortlessly produces the lowest bass. Biodyna is stiff and lightweight as a diaphragm material but also promises excellent damping. Biocellulose allows Fostex to keep the large 50mm driver under control at all times even as frequencies rise, averting any harsh intermodulation due to cone modal break-up. TH900's highs sparkle and breathe naturally, with a transparency ahead of its time for what was capable behind closed cups. Notes start and stop on a dime, transients properly defined without smear or bleed – clearly a low-distortion affair for even-handed and natural music reproduction throughout. For More] This means that spatial audio is now within reach for all users. Replacing the HP700 as Bose's flagship over-ear headphones, the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones offer a powerful blend of Bose Immersive Audio and industry-leading noise-cancellation. The QC Ultra boasts a completely re-engineered system, featuring proprietary DSP, a robust chipset, and advanced microphones. It comes with an onboard IMU and a newly developed, proprietary Bose digital signal processing software that unlocks two distinct Immersive Audio modes: "Still" and "Motion." Tago Studio T3-03Tago Studio T3-03

    Tago Studio T3-03

Costs go down on T3-03, but quality stays up because Tago Studio just don't cut corners with sound. Their flagship wooden T3-01 headphone gets brought to a more affordable point with plastic earcups – in a move that enables many more yet to access studio-quality sound. But T3-03 isn't just a clone, with its own identity firmly established with new pleather earpads bringing voices to the fore of the experience. Still the deep bass and sparkly treble that so defined T3-03's elder sibling remains present, such that this entry-level offering is a wonderful gateway experiencing music at an extremely high quality. [See Product Desc. For More] T3-03's driver is capable for moving the copious amount of air required to reproduce a deep, rumbling and impactful sub-bass. And shallow earpads push vocals and mid-range instruments right to the fore, for perfect clarity. It continues to move as a piston, without cone or modal break-up, even as frequencies rise owing to its humble proportions.  Tago Studio's resulting lack of distortion is audible, and as key to content creators accurately judging what's on their tracks as you enjoying the tunes they make for your enjoyment – as the artist intended. That's further helped by T3-03's voice coil kept thin and light by a 70ohm impedance. Inertia is low and Tago's driver reacts instantly to the smallest voltage impulses. Indeed, it's a 70ohm load that's simultaneously easy to drive for any partnering amplifier, such that a studio console, mixer or tube amplifier with varying output impedance mates comfortably with suitable damping factor. Apart from frequency response being less prone to variation from impedance mismatch, T3-03's easy load means many modern bridge-tied load outputs on music players won't grind their gears pushing into inordinately low impedances – small power supplies and output stages producing less in the way of distortion and noise as a result. T3-03 will make for a happy result running from iBasso Audio's DC04 Pro and DX170, but high output impedance, imperfect voltage sources from FiiO and Shanling will not be tested untowardly either – music players from the latter both having enough mettle to push Tago very satisfactorily.  Clearly, there are infinite ways to enjoy the Tago Studio exciting accuracy, with infinite satisfaction following in the studio, at home or on the go. WHAT TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING HEADPHONES

Before you invest in a pair of headphones, there are several factors that needs to be considered. Besides choosing wired or wireless headphones, we recommend headphones with detachable cables and changeable earpads for the longevity of the product. In doing so, you have opened up your headphones to further customization, as you could pair it with a different set of cables, achieving a nuanced difference in the audio presentation of your headphones! If you want to buy wired headphones, you can then choose from closed or open-back headphones, if it is for long hours of listening at home or just a quick plug-and-play.

    CLOSED OR OPEN?

    OPEN-BACK HEADPHONES

Open -back headphones have perforations on the outer shell and generally provide a more open feel to your music. They allow air to flow freely through the back of the earcups, creating an expansive soundstage with improved imaging and accuracy. Open-back headphones let your music out, creating a more natural listening experience. Compared to closed-back headphones, the open design of these headphones tend to produce a wider stereo image with a better sense of depth and ambience. For  longer hours of listening, we recommend open-back headphones if you have the space to yourself. Open-back headphones give a more natural presentation of the sound, like hearing someone talk without a mask on.

They are ideal for listeners who treasure a more immersive and uninterrupted quiet environment. Hence, they are open to a myriad of listeners, from music producers, to the general music lover – as long as they all share a common ground in looking for an enhanced level of sound quality. Also, if you tend to listen to music in the comfort of your own home, looking to buy open-back headphones from our audio shop in Singapore might be worth serious consideration.

    CLOSE-BACK HEADPHONES

When it comes to sound quality and noise isolation, close-back headphones are your best bet. Closed-back headphones are sealed, meaning there are no visible perforations on the outer shell, and you cannot hear any music emanating from the headphones unless you stand close by. Closed-back headphones will block out any external noise from interfering with your music.

Close-back headphones  will allows you the convenience to be in more varied environments, since there is no longer a need for the background to be quiet. Hence, you will be able to carry them out with you, and listen to it as and when you prefer. Additionally, close-back headphones  tend to offer a more intimate soundstage, so it favours music lovers who prefer the feeling of their favourite playbacks to being closer to them. If you typically listen to music while working in your office in Singapore , closed-back earphones would make a good choice.

HEADPHONES ON THE GO OR FOR HOME LISTENING?

Before buying your pair of headphones, it is recommended to test them out at our audio shop in Singapore. Choose something with noise-cancelling features, long battery life or foldable form factor over earphones for commuting if you usually have trouble fitting earphones. There are also headphones for long hours of home listening, which may be open-backed and require amplification, or they could also be as simple as you would like them to be.
