    Craft Ears Aurum CIEM

Aurum arrives: Craft Ears enter phase two of their growth not just content to experiment with hybrids, but tri-brids too. An exciting W-shaped flagship emerges with electrostatic high frequency drivers entering the fray, flanking four balanced armatures all propped up by one large 10mm dynamic driver. W-shaped or evenly represented in the bass, mids and treble, depending on how you want to look at it. But what's not for debate is it wouldn't be Craft Ears to just count out drivers. Jedrek Nowicki releases Aurum as far greater than the sum of its parts through handy acoustic tools first seen in Craft Six. Ear Fidelity hails this flagship "one of the best CIEMs on the market at this price range". It became Everyday Listening's "personal benchmark around its asking price and will likely remain so for some time to come". [See Product Desc. For More] Aurum's dual electrostatic drivers show up in Space Expansion System (SES™) 2.0. A precisely calculated, computer modelled horn structure placed at the output to act as an acoustic amplifier sees the SPL from notoriously insensitive Sonions boosted naturally by the enclosure. SES™ 2.0 naturally bypasses any distortion caused by overly taxing the electrostatic units for more volume. Aurum presents Singapore with an electrostatic treble that promises both quantity, and quality.  Excitement about the high frequencies shouldn't distract audiophiles from Aurum's low ones, though. The polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) dynamic driver acts as a subwoofer with impressive presence in the sub-bass region.  PEN is a material ZMF Headphones bring to bear in their flagship Vérité since it "has more dynamic response than a metal". Aurum's single low driver does the work of many balanced armatures and uses PEN's excellent damping to its advantage, rising cleanly up without modal distortion to meet its mid-range drivers in a perfect hand-off that's clean and coherent.  Seven drivers are brought together by a crossover that works as a resistive load, maintaining a flatter impedance throughout the frequency range for a consistent response with more sources, whether mobile phone or high output impedance music player. It's never just about the drivers, but rather Craft Ears' careful optimisation once again to provide the platform for their tools to perform – brought beautifully together in a flagship such as Aurum. ***Listed price covers basic colours. Please consult crew for details.***Additional fees may apply depending on choice of design. ***CIEM expected lead time is 6 to 8 weeks. Aurum is a low-impedance IEM that will excel when driven by Questyle Audio's current-mode M12, and can also be bought in universal (UIEM) form. Craft Ears Argentum CIEM

Built in silver, Craft Ears hint at the sense of sparkle found in Argentum. The second of the Polish brand's hybrid line-up, this dynamic and dual balanced armature release hits hard and takes charge in the bass and treble. Argentum will certainly grab your attention with its V-shaped presentation. Building on Craft Four's work but tuning down the mid-bass presence gives rise to imaging potential, with instrument placement precise in an open soundstage. [See Product Desc. For More] Bass is always fast with a 10mm carbon fibre driver that's designed to match the pistonic power of a stiffer material but with improved self-damping for a cleaner and smoother, quality low-end. This three-driver masterpiece inherits the horn-loaded tweeter of its Craft Six sibling too, matching the zeal present in the bass. A flat impedance crossover means Argentum will keep you excited no matter what source you plug into, dropping the beat that'll keep you going all day. ***Listed price covers basic colours. Craft Ears Craft SIX (C6) CIEM

Craft Ears packed six drivers into Craft Six, but that's only half of what went into a technology-laden flagship from these Polish innovators.  Geared into a well-tuned V-shape with a wide bandwidth and tasteful, never overcooked, emphasis in the bass and treble, Craft Six promises to keep you excited for a very, very long time. Those craving energy and life at the frequency extremes will be served well by Craft Six's proprietary technologies. [See Product Desc. For More] RASEN Bass™ (Reference Acoustic Spiral Enhanced Bass) is a patent-pending solution – precisely calculated and designed 3D printed structure – that creates low-end notes as realistic as a true subwoofer. Meanwhile, SES™ (Space Expanse System) is Craft Ears' very own field-specific, 3D printed, horn-loaded tweeter tuned in a very particular bandwidth. Bringing to the field unique inventions to continue the development of the venerable balanced armature, Craft Six is the beginning, and the end, of your search for a TOTL IEM. Headfonics praise the company for "ensuring the BA drivers are not overly pushed and peaky to deliver that natural and very balanced sounding tone", Twister6 checking off the "clarity, resolution, realism" requirements for a flagship. The Headphone List reserves mention for Craft Six's dynamic-like power, and Ear Fidelity, its speed and clinical approach. Headfonia round out the accolades with a Recommended Buy award, recognition for Craft Six "getting the very most out of its drivers with a technically strong performance and a smooth musical tuning". ***Listed price covers basic colours. AAW Z06 CIEM

Lucky number '6' goes onto Advanced AcousticWerkes' latest budget wonder – the Z06. Building on their experience with the 4+2, they've taken the same six drivers but completely reinvented the formula.  More complete than its 4+2 predecessor that ruled the mid-range and imparted a cream to vocals and instruments, Z06 extends its emphasis to the extremes. The star of Z06's show is undoubtedly its pair of isobaric dynamic drivers. AAW have had multiple iterations to perfect its 6mm dual dynamic set-up, and it shows with its kind of performance in the low frequencies here. Z06 hits hard and fast in the lows, small diameter drivers granted plenty of speed while able to move sufficient air due to their surface area – a direct result of their doubling up as an isobaric pair. [See Product Desc. For More] AAW's implementation of their BassFlow Vent Pressure System grants Z06 both the air volume necessary to produce prodigious quantities of bass and has the added benefit of damping the drivers when they move out of phase. That provides optimal control. Z06 hits hard and fast but never becomes overbearing, as its low-frequency drivers stay locked under the grip of neodymium magnets. Thankfully, the rest of Z06's performance stays as good as its bass. AAW's dynamic drivers count on great damping owing to their humble 6mm proportions to climb up in frequencies without cone break-up. Mids stay clean as the handover to Z06's balanced armatures is performed seamlessly. As much thought about implementing Z06's higher frequencies took place. Its 3D-printed acoustic cavities leverage powerful computer simulations. By simulating hundreds of driver and nozzle configurations, AAW meticulously analysed each iteration to identify the perfect balance of phasing, response and overall acoustic performance in Z06. AAW ensure every element works in perfect harmony, resulting in superior sound quality. Z06 is a bottom-to-top budget banger, granting you excitement with its V-shape while maintaining its audiophile sensibilities. Balanced armatures for bass, and bone conductors for mids, lead to Canpur's CP622B possibly ending 2023 as the year's most compelling flagship earphone for its refinement of tone, realism and accuracy. Please refer to the artwork guide here. Twister6 knew Canpur were more than just flavour of the month when he heard them. This 10-driver tri-brid promises a lightness of touch and represents the finest of juggling acts that leads to arguably one of 2023's most complete propositions. The debut of Sonion's bone conduction drivers in balanced armature format size, that doesn't take up tons of space and require a lightning bolt to drive? Yes, please.  Indeed, implementing them to reproduce mids and highs has led to a deftness, sweetness and softness of transients that at once promises to be the Goldilocks of everyone's taste and tolerance. CP622B bursts onto the scene late but better than never, because Head-Fi has been waiting for a package that sounds so effortlessly life-like, from bottom to top. [See Product Desc. For More] By being unconventional in their custom driver selection from Sonion – an abundance of balanced armatures handling low-frequency reproduction for fast and accurate bass packing plenty of rumble and presence – Canpur head into 2024 with a true statement of intent. CP622B incorporates an original micro-inverter tube design within its cavity, a design enhancing the cohesion of low frequencies when compared to traditional ordinary air outlets. The debut of bone conduction drivers from Sonion for the mid and high frequencies then provide all the natural tone audiophiles could crave. The dual diaphragm of its co-directional vibration efficiently utiles the auricle and bone layer of the ear structure to transmit sound to the auditory nerve for a visceral portrayal of vocals and a 3D soundstage. CP622B finishes off with the latest generation of electrostatic tweeters for a sweet sprinkle of air and sparkle. This entry-level IEM is the result of a year of research dedicated to achieving this goal. It features a large, powerful woofer that delivers deep, layered bass, paired with AAW's innovative NOVA driver - think of it like a super tweeter for your ears! [See Product Desc. For More] This combination lets you hear every detail, from rich vocals to subtle ambient sounds. The M20 might look familiar - it's a revival of one of AAW's first models from 2015. Back then, it used Sonion acuPass technology. This time around, we've modernised it with cutting-edge tech: digitised acoustic design, 3D printing and their own NOVA drivers. Even though it uses a simple 2-driver design, the M20 punches above its weight. The drivers are expertly chosen and implemented to faithfully reproduce audio. Here's a deeper dive into the tech: the M20 uses a specially designed armature driver with a unique open vent. This driver sits deep within the 3D-printed nozzle, placing it incredibly close to your eardrum. This eliminates sound pressure loss and avoids resonances that can occur in traditional balanced armature designs. Check out AAW's other items here, or view all our other IEMs here.

    Why Buy Custom In-Ear Monitors

Custom IEMs are the preferred choice for audiophiles, professional musicians, and those who struggle with fit for most regular earphones. While Bluetooth earphones are recommended for days requiring convenience, selecting the right wired earphones elevates your music effortlessly.

For performers, they provide crystal-clear on-stage monitoring. For audiophiles, they unlock the full potential of high-fidelity audio or your favourite pieces.

Committing to customised earphones is an investment with these immediate benefits:

    • Perfect Fit and Comfort: CIEMs eliminate pressure points and won't fall out, even during rigorous activity, due to their exact anatomical match to your ear. Eartips are no longer necessary as they are not needed for CIEMs.
    • Superior Noise Isolation: They offer exceptional passive noise isolation, silencing ambient noise without active noise cancellation, making them perfect for travel or loud environments.
    • Unrivalled Sound Quality: The perfect seal delivers sound directly to your ear canal, ensuring accurate bass response and a detailed, consistent sonic experience.
    • Personalised Design: Instantly recognisable and meaningful, you can now mark this pair with your chosen design or personal artwork.

    IEMs vs Earphones

While standard earphones offer good sound and basic portability, custom IEMs deliver with precision for critical listening or pure enjoyment. Custom in-ear monitors are designed for a deeper insertion and better seal, improving sound isolation and offering a more precise, stage-ready sound quality. The fitted IEMs naturally lower hearing volumes as the sound is angled better to your ear canals. This good practice protects hearing better and eliminates the need to struggle with eartip sizes and replacements.

    Universal vs Custom IEMs

Both universal and custom in-ear monitors can offer a high-fidelity listening experience, but CIEMs offer advantages, particularly for demanding activities such as musical performances or competitive gaming.

However, the primary difference is fit/security: universal IEMs rely on generic tips, which can compromise the seal during movement (such as commuting or at the gym), whereas your custom IEM fit is anatomically perfect and does not fall out. This precise seal maximises sound isolation, surpassing universal options.

The universal fit means most can share or wear your earphones, but the customised fit is moulded and can only fit your ears.

When considering universal or customised fit, we recommend universal fit for those who intend to share or sell their earphones eventually and customised for more committed, personal listening.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CUSTOM IN-EAR MONITORS

Do I need ear impressions, and how do I get them? +

Yes, custom in-ear monitors require precise ear impressions. Visit Zeppelin & Co.’s audio cafe for guidance on obtaining professional, accurate impressions to ensure a perfect fit. Your ear moulds will be checked, scanned in .stl files, and emailed to you and the chosen brand to start building your ordered pair.

How long does it take to make and deliver custom IEMs? +

The timeline for manufacturing and delivering your custom IEMs varies by brand, model, and current order volume. Check with the crew for the estimated and status updates through your preferred communicationmethod: WhatsApp, call, email, socials, or store visit.

Can custom IEMs be re-shelled, adjusted, or refit if the fit isn’t right? +

Check with the crew on the selected brand’s reshell policy. If the fit for your customised earphones isn't perfect, most brands have a 30-day refit policy from the date of collection. However, brand policies may differ from one to another.

How long do CIEMs typically last? +

Custom in-ear monitors are built with high-quality, durable materials designed to last for several years and even decades of regular use when taken care of. However, because our ears gradually change shape over time, the custom fit may degrade after a few years, potentially requiring a remoulding service to ensure the perfect acoustic seal and comfort. Most CIEMs are damaged because they were dropped or mishandled during cable changes.

Are CIEMs good for gaming? +

Custom IEMs can offer incredible sound isolation, pinpoint directional audio, and a secure, comfortable fit for hours of gaming, increasing your competitive edge and enjoyment.

How do I begin the CIEM selection process? +

Find out the brands offering custom in-earmonitors, and select based on price, sound, and or design. If you have a receive-by date due to performances, travel, or other scenarios, please check with the crew on the estimated wait time to build your CIEM. Most brands take 8 to 10 weeks to build a pair. Alternatively, explore our Bluetooth earphones for wireless convenience.

Are custom IEMs worth it if I’m not a professional musician? +

Yes, custom IEMs are a worthwhile investment for any serious audiophile or music lover in Singapore. They offer unmatched comfort and sound quality, elevating the quality of everyday listening.
