    ZMF Headphones Auteur Classic

The Auteur Classic is the resurrection of the pillar that has anchored ZMF Headphones' flagship line of headphones. Auteur Classic's gets the Atrium Damping System upgrade to bring its biocellulose driver to new heights. It's the fulfilment of the potential from Auteur's drivers – an even-handed approach through the frequency range gains new dimensions of headstage. The upgraded acoustic enclosure enables Auteur Classic to exhibit top to bottom control across the frequency range, yielding extremely detailed, authoritative, yet natural sound. Paying homage to its predecessor, ZMF Founder Zach Mehrbach hails the Classic upgrade as boasting more air, resolution, dynamic range and a smoother, blacker sound, while retaining everything that the original Auteur was. [See Product Desc. For More] Stereophile were already sold by the OG, barely believing "how relaxed and unbelievably transparent" the Auteur was, as it "rendered diverse recordings at what I consider to be the highest levels of audio verity, exceeded only by the preternatural resolving powers of the HiFiMan Susvara, the Abyss AB-1266 Phi, and now, the closed version of ZMF's new Vérité headphones, which are named, simply, the Vérité Closed". That's some illustrious company for the Auteur Classic, and the biggest card in its hand yet is the famed Atrium Damping System that made its debut on its bigger biocellulose brother, the namesake Atrium. The patented Atrium Damping System perfectly illustrates how far up the R&D ladder ZMF have come.  Starting with biocellulose, stiff and lightweight as a diaphragm material, this fibre also promises excellent damping. Biocellulose allows ZMF to keep the large 50mm driver under control at all times even as frequencies rise, averting any harsh intermodulation due to cone modal break-up. The Atrium system then works hand in hand with Auteur Classic's driver. It allows ZMF to choose how little or much back-wave damping is needed from the negative impulses of the biocellulose driver, which back waves they had to keep, and which they want to get rid of, for an optimal headphone acoustic system. An incredible amount of fine-tuning takes place selecting distances within the cup and damping material for optimal airflow. Atrium Damping was a three-year process before ZMF deemed ready to release their labour of love to the public, breathing new life into the company's quintessential model – the Auteur. To explore different driver materials entirely, have yourself even more resolution with ZMF's Vérité, more punch with ZMF's Aeolus, or browse our other open-back options here!

Matrix Audio Element X2Matrix Audio Element X2

    Matrix Audio Element X2

This is the pinnacle, a streaming DAC pre-amp worthy of bearing the title of Matrix Audio's flagship. Element X2 impresses on every front, whether viewed from a digital or analog point of design. Hi-Fi News bestow it an Outstanding Product award and Hifi Pig sent Matrix 5 ❤️. The addition of HDMI ARC for use in home theatre is the obvious upgrade on its predecessor but watch out for its galvanic isolation making real headway for its measured noise performance and, most importantly, audible improvements. This galvanic isolation is the cherry on top of the cake. Noise was already suppressed by Matrix's Hyper Control volume solution mixing the advantages of combined analog and digital attenuation. Headphone Guru promises Element X2 combines power and transparency. No matter whether you choose to operate via ethernet or dual-band Wi-Fi – even tethered to your TV – Element X2 runs as silently as the competition's tomb. [See Product Desc. For More]  Thorough circuit optimisation, layout and isolation means Matrix continue to reap the benefits from ESS Technology's ES9038Pro flagship, with over 130dB of signal-to-noise ratio. You'll absolutely want to hear your music from this Matrix pinnacle, and Element X2 ensures it's easy getting your tracks aboard. Stream from Spotify and Tidal Connect on top of its usual Roon Ready status, or browse network files via freeware MA Remote or your favourite UPnP/DLNA app. Even get your guests on your entertainment system using Apple AirPlay 2. Part of Element X2's point is input from this decade's generation of smart TVs. HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) transfers audio from the signal to this Matrix for higher quality playback. If your TV or projector supports HDMI CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) protocol, Element X2's playback can be controlled by your display device. The bustling conduit of inputs means electronic noise is inevitable from Element X2's CPU. That's why Matrix have built in full galvanic isolation with independent power supplies for general system CPU operation, and DSP audio processing work carried on a Xilinx FPGA. This isolation is provided through optocouplers – and with total galvanic isolation consisting not just of separate power supplies, but separate grounds, Matrix have covered all bases. Indeed, power supply is overbuilt. The ARM CPU draws from a switch-mode power supply. Meanwhile, a dedicated linear power supply built around a toroidal transformer juices Element X2's FPGA, clock, and analog line and headphone stages. With dual topology supplies, the lifeblood of great audio is not only abundant, it's clean. Digitally a dedicated master of time is derived via a Crystek CCHD-950 clock that pushes phase noise and jitter down for a clean and precise decode. Matrix even give you the option to run Element X2 in asynchronous or synchronous mode. It's not the clock that's always in charge of the music – it's you. Because you could choose to run Element X2 as you've usually done, beyond arm's length using Roon Remote, the stock MA Remote software, and Tidal Connect. But now Matrix add a 3.46 inch LCD touch screen for anyone keen to take advantage of Element X2 in a desktop setting. Double tap to wake the screen, and swipe left and right to access a myriad of features at the lift of a finger while listening to its balanced 4.4mm headphone amp that outputs up to 2.6 watts. Element X2 doubles the number of output devices in parallel compared to Element M2, increasing current handling capability and damping factor. This headphone amp packs brute power but also finesse. Lower volume levels with sensitive headphones still preserve all the resolution in your music with Matrix's Hyper Control volume solution.  This combines the precision of a fine digital volume control with a relay-controlled analog solution for bigger steps. Hyper Control keeps the ES9038Pro in a position where the chip always maintains its full dynamic range capability, together with the low noise of Element X2, for a wide range of listening volumes. Its pre-amp function also takes advantage of Hyper Control. Element X2's potent line stage is transferred to its XLR and RCA outputs in this case, packing +10dB of extra gain for up to 15.8Vrms output to match various power amplifiers' input sensitivities. No pre-amp needed – the Element X2 solution fits all. With so many options at one's disposal, and all of equivalent quality, the Element X2 promises to take up pride of place in a stereo system or one's headphone booth, outputting the best small signal to elevate the potential of your painstakingly assembled chain. Feliks Audio EnvyFeliks Audio Envy

    Feliks Audio Envy

For OTL tube manufacturers Feliks Audio, the route to the top of Head-Fi's hill ran contrarian with massive output transformers – and still proved to be the Envy of everyone. A flagship powerhouse amplifier, its design centered around famed 300B tubes. While the brand's OTL amplifiers had proven to be delicate, pure and low-powered affairs, there is nothing subtle about the construction of Envy. Feliks set out to build the ultimate tube amplifier pushing over 5 watts of Class A power at clipping. Stereophile "admit to being taken by the Envy's bold but tasteful style ... it's top-of-the-world wonderful". Effortlessly able to drive Susvara – in fact lauded by Ear Fidelity and Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity as the best headphone amp they've heard HIFIMAN's flagship through – Envy is a true statement of ambition by these prolific Poles. Headfonia warn it'll be the Envy of you after electing it to their Recommended Buys list, similar to Soundnews who gave it an Editor's Choice award. And Headfonics call it an essential demo if you want to elevate any elite flagship headphone – echoed by Hifi Pig. [See Product Desc. For More] As you'd expect of a statement amplifier, Envy can have no weaknesses. Depending on output transformers for brute power, this Feliks flagship still retains all the purity that this brand has come to be defined by. It's a champion of frequency extension both up and down; chunks of iron in the signal path or not. Running in single-ended Class A to preserve the all-important even order harmonics triode enthusiasts crave from such topologies, Envy is inherently linear. Its high operating voltage and high bias means that its entire circuit operates stably with zero feedback. That's aided by the use of 300B tubes providing Feliks Audio access to square law and load-line characteristics to push distortion down from the drawing board. Triode plate impedance also means that any clipping is soft and graceful, veering from harshness. Running in the open loop doesn't stop Envy from producing enormous frequency extension up to 100Khz at -3dB. The preservation of high-frequency triode transparency is certainly no mean feat without the aid of negative feedback. Meanwhile, the finest coupling capacitors and its large output transformers sees low frequencies plumb down to 8Hz – truly subterranean levels, for a tube amplifier of any sort. WATCH ALSO Timelapse: the painstaking hand-assembly of Envy This Feliks frequency extension pays off in truly flat phase reproduction in the audible human hearing range, for impactful bass and realistic portrayal of musical images. Dynamics are life-like and on par with the best solid-state amplifiers. Indeed, none of the resolution Feliks Audio has been associated with from its OTL work has been lost in Envy, bearing uber-revealing CV-181 drivers from Psvane. But users wanting to squeeze the final drops of detail have the opportunity to build this behemoth in its Performance Edition, featuring UPOCC point-to-point copper wiring, and upgraded 300B power tubes from Electro-Harmonix to Full Music for the ultimate signal path. Inside and outside, Envy is a prestige product that belongs in a reference Hi-Fi rack. Its balanced pre-amplifier outputs allow you to operate it just that way into a full-sized, stereo power amplifier, passing through the entire 6SN7-300B stage and out through the rear. Definitely place Envy somewhere prominent: you won't be able to tear yourself away from gazing upon its beautiful wood build, nor hearing this pinnacle, for long. Otherwise, seek Feliks Audio's other OTL builds if you're looking for a smaller footprint here, and our other amplifiers here.

    Vision Ears Phonix

From the embers of Erlkönig a new Vision Ears Phönix rose. The former awoke a burning appetite in Head-Fi for an uber-flagship built entirely from balanced armatures, and the 13-driver Phönix has now assumed the mantle of leading this movement. Why change a winning formula – but Phönix did, just enough in the right areas. Small optimisations and improvements here and there, that make a big difference. Shedding Erlkönig's weight, Vision Ears mills each shell of this symbol from a single block of carbon fibre. Losing grams but gaining strength, enough to hold up the weight of expectations, Phönix is finished proudly to take Head-Fi by storm. Sitting above 13 drivers each, a prominent Phönix logo is mounted on a red chrome layer below a beautiful domed sapphire glass faceplate. [See Product Desc. For More] Visually this Vision Ears works a treat, and sonically it backs all that up with a kind of tonal density from bottom to top. Quantity of drivers is a quality of its own, and what Phönix does is only possible with the expert implementation of 13 drivers for a true status symbol. Utterly rich of tone and indulgent in its presentation, a delicate treble also gives rise to a special height of soundstage as this TOTL's X factor. Phönix's prestige carries on into material accessorisation. A premium 23 AWG silver-gold alloy and OCC copper-litz cable comes terminated in 2.5mm for balanced operation straight from the box.  And a genuine leather case mimicking the aesthetics of an exclusive watch display is included to protect your precious Phönix, leather key strap available separately.  The completeness of the package and maturity on show from Vision Ears here was hailed by Headfonia, who unreservedly put it on their Recommended Buys list. Twister6 confirmed Erlkönig has been resurrected.  Headfonics say Phönix's "coherent timbre has an inviting and intoxicating blend of smooth-sounding mids and gorgeously rich vocals backed up by a punchy low-end performance when called upon". Simply undeniable, the Phönix has risen triumphantly to soar as an icon. Whet your appetites by first viewing the rest of our Vision Ears collection here, or our other IEMs here.

    iBasso AMP13iBasso AMP13

    iBasso AMP13

Nutubes return to iBasso Audio, bigger and better through Amp13 for DX340. The size and power supply afforded by their flagship music players allowed iBasso to take this tube design to new heights. That extra circuit board space has allowed Korg's sixth-generation Nutube direct-heated triode to achieve new levels of signal-to-noise ratio, transparency and output power. Holding its own even against its balanced Amp14 sibling, iBasso's Amp13 brings plenty of even-order harmonics to sweeten synergies given its single-ended operation throughout. Eschewing bridge-tied load operation means Amp13 also outperforms its counterpart into low impedances. Headfonics confirm Amp13 does all the above, offering the liquidity tube lovers desire. Musicality won out for Audio-Ph. Upgrading to iBasso's mature Nutube tech was totally worth it to Audiophile-Heaven. [See Product Desc. For More] Placed on Amp13's voltage gain stage where it will yield the biggest sonic difference, this Nutube's small output then gets boosted by a Toshiba FET buffer. This preserves Amp13's triode square law, and grants it enough juice to drive the rest of the solid-state output stage.  READ ALSO DAPs have gone down the tube iBasso built Amp13 with dual 3.5mm outputs. The hybrid Nutube section directly feeds Amp13's low noise, low output port (2.5Vrms) for sensitive IEMs. Meanwhile, an intermediary solid-state driver stage gets added for the high output port (4.1Vrms) to push Focals and Fostexs needing more gain. DX340's dynamic range spec is maintained through NJR's NJU72315 digitally-controlled analog volume part, and iBasso hide yet another trick up their sleeve: forcibly driving the ground signal of Amp13 to increase output power and reduce noise. The separate 2,000mAh analog battery aboard the DX3XX line supplies the backbone of power for Amp13's high operating voltages, with four clean, individual DC power sections for crucial parts of the module. The anode packs 21 volts of supply, while eight volt output rails continue to maintain excellent open-loop linearity before negative feedback. Such is expected of a high-performance iBasso Amp13 module that yields excellent distortion and noise specifications, while capturing the romance of tubes in DX340. PW Audio No. 10 (Headphones)

No. 10 is OCC copper, but PW Audio have managed to inject a silver-like level of upper frequency energy and detail in this build, perfect for teasing out the last bits of resolution Fostex's TH900 is capable of. Such differentiation to No. 5 is appreciated, because here is a cable that alternates perfectly with its sibling in PW's line. No. 10's greater detail isn't achieved at the expense of the smooth, toe-tapping addictiveness that defines Peter Wong's creations. Vocals still remain sweet, and bass goes deep serving as a foundation for its open, soaring highs. PW Audio No. 5 (Headphones)

    PW Audio No. 5 (Headphones)

PW Audio's flagships often take the headlines, which is why No. 5 surprises everyone for the level of immersion it promises as one's first upgrade cable for the Fostex TH900. No. 5 behaves exactly as you'd expect a copper cable to perform, providing warm high-end detail without fatigue, and smooth liquid mid-ranges.  Despite its obvious colouration, PW Audio's basic No. 5 still respects the accuracy of your music and recordings, offering little to no exaggeration in the bass frequency regions. Or you can enjoy a very different view from No. 5's counterpart, No. 10, here. Also view the rest of our PW Audio cables here, and our other cables here.

Cayin HA-300B Mk. IICayin HA-300B Mk. II

    Cayin HA-300B Mk. II

Cayin Audio’s HA-300 MKII is upon us, to ensure the modern headphone enthusiast can continue to enjoy the magic from historic 300B tubes with any headphone. Important refinements over its predecessor include a MUSES72320 resistor ladder electronic volume control part. This preserves signal-to-noise ratio and channel balance down to the ALPS-controlled encoder's lowest level – perfect for however much, or little, travel you need. A 4.4mm output ensures yet more headphones can be plugged in via Pentaconn’s ubiquitous connector for transformer-balanced operation. With headphones having developed leaps and bounds since the turn of the decade, Cayin guarantee their latest and greatest flagship keeps up with the times. That was exactly as Headfonics discovered, such that any can thrown at it performed in ways not thought possible. [See Product Desc. For More] HA-300 MKII has been built again as a Class A single-ended triode amplifier to preserve the all-important even-order harmonics audio enthusiasts crave from such topologies. But Cayin's flagship remains a truly reference device. The direct-heated magic from Genelex PX300Bs – bearing the Gold Lion mark of quality – continues to provide Cayin with access to square law, load line and graceful soft-clipping triode functions at the drawing board to push down distortion without the crutch of negative feedback.  HA-300 MKII's high tube operating voltage ensures excellent open-loop linearity and additionally reduces the need for negative feedback. Clean power is supplied by a physically separated power supply built around a massive toroid. A choke input in tandem with a huge smoothing capacitor locks stable, quality, DC power in place without sag, post 22DE4 tube rectification. Indeed, power supply regulation is thorough, extending beyond typical small signal regions to encompass even the power stage and high-voltage sections of the amplifier. Huge EI-core output transformers with reinforcing shielding are wound in-house to Cayin’s exact spec for frequency extension at the extremes, lowering impedances and providing immense inductance for the lowest bass reproduction, plus great top-end transparency owing to their shape. Custom-built AudioCapX MultiCap coupling capacitors upgraded for MKII's signal path are also ideal for passing low frequencies and extending bass down to 10Hz. Phase reproduction in the audible human hearing range remains stellar as a result, with taut dynamics and impactful slam – not the wooly affairs of yesteryear's transformer amps. That high bandwidth gets delivered into any working personal audio transducer, with HA-300 MKII's output transformers allowing it to drive low-impedance, low-sensitivity planar-magnetic headphones balanced via 4.4mm and 4-pin XLRs pushing up to 6 watts on the front. That potent Class A power can even be switched to speaker terminals on the rear to drive high-impedance, high-sensitivity passive speakers from the likes of Rogers, DeVORE Fidelity or Zu Audio. What's crazier is this brute in ballet shoes produces next to no hiss into sensitive earphones via 4.4mm ... a true feat, barely imaginable, till this point. There is therefore almost no scenario in which you can't enjoy this HA-300 MKII behemoth. Or, employ a different Cayin specialist that you can browse here, and view all our other amplifiers here.

    Fostex TH610

Fostex have outdone themselves with TH610, resetting expectations for what Head-Fi should come to expect from a three-figure closed-back headphone. Hi-Fi Choice rated it near-perfect. Coloured but correct – with a flat, linear bass, tons of mid-range space, detail and sparkle, and highs that extend into the ether – the U-shaped TH610 is as trustworthy and yet fun as they come. [See Product Desc. For More] Fostex build TH610 in beautiful matte finished black walnut housings, a plain finish that still reeks of sophistication, finesse and engagement. Do judge this book by its cover, at the sound quality awaiting you. TH610's 50mm driver is made of Biodyna. Stiff and lightweight as a diaphragm but also promising excellent damping, this biocellulose material allows Fostex to keep the large driver under control at all times even as frequencies rise, averting any harsh intermodulation due to cone modal break-up. Notes start and stop on a dime, transients properly defined without smear or bleed – clearly a low-distortion affair for even-handed and natural music reproduction throughout. A one-tesla magnet keeps TH610's driver locked down and under control at all times. Fostex have a mid-tier headphone that makes claim to get you all the way, carving a space for itself in an ever-more competitive market with its closed-back isolation by design and easy-to-drive nature from humble amplification. Hi-Fi World say TH610 is among the best.
