    Cayin RU7Cayin RU7

    Cayin RU7

1-bit, multiple possibilities. After the debut of Head-Fi's first discrete 1-bit, all-to-DSD, music player in N7, Cayin Audio have miniaturised the technology further in RU7. This latest novel 4.4mm USB DAC/amp from innovators Cayin therefore promises to upsize your enjoyment of music with the same decoding topology that saw N7 greeted with aplomb. Built of 128 individual resistors, RU7 converts all your normal PCM playback – via CD rips, Hi-Res downloads and Spotify, Tidal or Apple Music streaming – into DSD before decoding to analog. Its size is proof that no task is too big for Cayin. Outputting in 4.4mm, RU7 is Cayin's perfect complement to the PCM, R2R, RU6. Headfonics says RU7 is "the best of the lot". Headfonia elected this mini DSD masterpiece to its Recommended Buys list. eCoustics add "it's the best dongle DAC we’ve tried yet". "RU7 continues the company’s hot streak of breaking new ground in DAC design ... 1-bit DAC in the RU7 is even more impressive than the R2R DAC [in RU6]" says The Headphone List. To Twister6 and ichos-reviews, RU7 even challenges DAPs. Bringing up to 400 milliwatts power to bear, the goodness of an all-to-DSD approach to decoding can be heard with all manner of portable Head-Fi. [See Product Desc. For More] All audio formats are passed as DSD through RU7's precise 1-bit decode. Cayin returns to Sony's Scarlet Book SACD revolution of the 1990s and elevates that conversion philosophy with modern mobile dongle hardware. RU7's highlight is its 1-bit decoder, converting all PCM files to quad-rate DSD first via DSP logic, while letting native DSD material flow on to the 128 discrete resistors in its DAC – in actuality a simple analog low-pass filter. There's zero error at the point of conversion in a 1-bit DAC. There, Cayin relies on Pulse-Density Modulation (PDM)'s total accuracy, and sheer ease of decoding. The pitch for DSD's 1-bit conversion is digital at its simplest and closest point to analog – level represented only either as a 1 or a 0, switching on or off. To achieve analog, the bitstream is simply low-pass filtered. Cayin's all-to-DSD discrete DAC is accurate ... and also elegant, breakthrough and historic in personal audio. It draws inspiration from the illustrious halls of Hi-Fi, where each EMM Labs, Nagra Audio, Playback Designs, PS Audio and of course, N7's, 1-bit DAC release has been greeted with accolades and fanfare. RU7's discrete proprietary tech immediately differentiates itself from commercial DAC chips, where IC packages are often too small to perform an ideal 1-bit conversion. RU7 also avoids the errors of dynamic element matching inherent to 2-7 bit delta-sigma decoders. The decoded analog goes through Cayin's specially designed resistor-based analog volume control for perfect channel matching at any level – facilitating that very special 1-bit discrete DSD decode and importantly preserving your music's true dynamic range resolution. A series resistor operates with shunts as voltage dividers in tandem with relays, to maintain near-perfect resolution of your music and a signal-to-noise ratio of over 110 dB. A totally novel volume solution has made this feat possible on a USB-powered dongle DAC. Cayin differentiates RU7 from RU6 in offering the former a line-out option whereby the volume control is bypassed for a fixed voltage out, perfect for listening into motor stereo systems as well as handy and portable personal speakers.  Meanwhile, RU7's 400mW output power is doubled compared to RU6's, such that this DSD DAC is capable of transferring all its forward-thinking fidelity into your prized transducers. Never fear for leaving your reference gear behind for Cayin's latest and greatest every-day carry.  There ends the list of exploits worthy of celebrating Cayin's 30th anniversary in arguably more ambitious a way than even N7 offered. Check out the rest of Cayin's gear here, or view our other USB dongle DACs here.

ZMF Headphones Bokeh ClosedZMF Headphones Bokeh Closed

    ZMF Headphones Bokeh Closed

This is the closed-back headphone from ZMF Headphones that everyone's been dreaming of. Bokeh is the first closed-back ZMF that can claim to be truly portable, with its isolation brought on the go with you in backpacks to offices and hotel rooms. It's the same ZMF quality and promise of durability sans unwieldy storage case. With customary lifetime ZMF driver warranty especially important as Bokeh gets put about the rigours of daily life, this is a build and tuning that will stand the test of time. Headfonia rates its effectiveness channeling ZMF's spirit, something Headfonics echo. It's a TechPowerUp award-winner. Brought to a new and affordable price point, the Bokeh is just the latest ZMF that stands to become a classic, bringing their cherished house sound with you on the go whether via USB dongle DAC/amp, music player or small desktop amp. [See Product Desc. For More] A natural step up from Tago Studio's T3-01 that traverses the bus then the desk, the Bokeh combines ergonomic portability with ZMF's traditional ability to scale from sound quality. ZMF's new entry-level is greater than the sum of its parts.  A new 80ohm Liquid Crystal Polymer driver is pushed to its acoustic limits with proprietary ZMF work, in their patented Atrium Damping System (ADS) first found in the flagship Atrium. All this tuning potential in earcup acoustics extends to Bokeh's owners with new Caldera earpads useful add-on options. Caldera pads bear a special fluted, tapered, horn-shaped design that take on the form of acoustic amplifiers. Leather or suede directly contribute to which frequencies you choose to enhance, making Bokeh such a pleasure because ADS makes it so versatile. Bokeh grants ZMF full control over a soundscape, with internal cavity design challenging the physical limits of linear full-range reproduction in closed-backs like never before. Acoustic dampers work closely together with driver mounting position for optimal diffusion effects, allowing ZMF to introduce greater perceived soundstage width and depth.  An incredible amount of fine-tuning took place selecting distances within the cup and damping material for optimal airflow, a five-year research and development process before ZMF deemed Bokeh ready to release to the public. Brought to a new point of cost-effectiveness is an 80ohm LCP driver that is the beating heart of Bokeh. It's a load that's simultaneously easy to drive for any partnering amplifier – such that a studio console, mixer or tube amplifier with varying output impedance mates comfortably with suitable damping factor. In fact, ZMF's newborn showcases a nominally flat impedance and thus exhibits the company's DNA, taking to tube amplification with exactly the same aplomb as its bigger siblings. Apart from frequency response being less prone to variation from impedance mismatch, Bokeh's easy load means many modern bridge-tied load outputs on music players won't grind their gears pushing into inordinately low impedances – small power supplies and output stages producing less in the way of distortion and noise as a result. Bokeh will make for a happy result running from iBasso Audio's DC07 Pro, DC Elite and DX180, but high output impedance, imperfect voltage sources from FiiO and Shanling will not be tested untowardly either – music players from the latter both having enough mettle to push this ZMF very satisfactorily.  Settling down from its travels at its natural habitat that is the desk, Bokeh will continue to display sound that belies its cost, scaling into small desktop amps from iFi Audio and HIFIMAN.  It's this versatility that really elevates Bokeh beyond the generic releases that otherwise dominates the mainstream. Oriolus Szalayi UIEM

The comfort zone. Oriolus build Szalayi with a planar-magnetic driver to sit at the epicentre of everyone's listening tastes and budget. This tri-brid enlists a 14mm planar for mids and flanks it with one dynamic driver and balanced armature, meeting Head-Fi's sweet spot for performance. It's typical that Oriolus blended three vastly different transducer topologies so seamlessly. Szalayi's three drivers sing in unison, and its coherency leads to a mid-price pinnacle of performance. For that it made its way onto Headfonia's Recommended Buys list. Headfonics say it's "an impressive IEM for bass heads ... capable of delivering a thunderous bass response with a clean and crisp mid-range". Bass and mids are convincingly portrayed with palpable dynamics and presence, topped off by a sprinkling of treble air that is ever delicate and finessed. Szalayi's authoritative, downward-sloping performance never strays out of our sonic comfort zone. [See Product Desc. For More] What a heavyweight Oriolus have on their hands, the clever utilisation of drivers perfect for rendering their assigned frequencies with excellent realism and resolution. Szalayi's star is undoubtedly its 14mm planar-magnetic mid-range driver. With a diaphragm less than two microns thick, mid-range frequencies are rendered with vanishingly low distortion. Despite its large surface area, the low mass of Oriolus's planar unit means it's always under the control of its magnetic array. Transients are produced instantly and effortlessly, without having to worry about modal break-up.  Indeed, Szalayi's thin vibrating surface needs minimal excursion to move plenty of air, reproducing tons of information, as a straight plane. This grants the simultaneous sense of presence and articulation balanced armature counterparts comparatively struggle to balance. With planar-magnetic drivers on the ascendency in multi-ways, Oriolus weighed in quickly and convincingly to define a new era in IEMs. That's because the sum of Szalayi's strengths lies in the contributions of its supporting cast. A stiff 10mm dynamic driver plumbs the lows, with the excellent excursion of audio's oldest transducer technology – perfect for producing a long, slow bass wave that descends in frequency and rumbles away in Szalayi's sub regions. Up high, a balanced armature takes over as the planar mid driver becomes directional and rolls off. Freed from having to move air beyond its means, this specialised tweeter's low distortion is the reason Oriolus's trademark clean, airy and refined treble can be implemented in the brand's latest star. Certainly, the story of Szalayi is one that produces music as it was recorded, adding few artifacts of its own and being true in its playback. There's always a demand for accuracy, and the sheer competence of Oriolus's latest child is bound to show up played through Questyle Audio's M15i, HiBy Music's R6III and iBasso Audio's Amp8 MKII for DX240. For those wanting to move beyond mere proficiency and instead be held spellbound by their music, the flagships from Oriolus await here. Otherwise, browse the rest of our IEMs here.

    Sennheiser IE600

600 means so much more than a number to Sennheiser. After the HD600 proved so much of a generational product, naming the IE600 shows exactly the expectations Sennheiser have for their next genre-defining IEM. StereoNET gave it an Applause Award and didn't expect Sennheiser's middle-child to mount such a shot at the top. Headfonics found it the "most credible-sounding monitor I have tested from Sennheiser in a while".  "Ad perfectum compromissum" is what Headfonia say "IE600 really is, the perfect blend between the reference IE900 and the super-fun IE300". Sure enough, IE600 is the name on every audiophile's lips. The iconic number permeates all levels of Head-Fi, and it's impossible not to be excited by another watershed release that will become so much more than a great transducer to gravitate around. [See Product Desc. For More] We know we've reached another height of research and development – Sennheiser's buzzwords – when this single dynamic driver wonder swept to multiple awards at launch. T3 and LBTechreviews both score IE600 full marks. the Ear cites it's a great example of a premium wired earbud's supremacy. That shouldn't come as a surprise. Sennheiser have tuned IE600 with the best form of neutrality, the kind that every discerning – even mildly – music lover can come to enjoy. Universally. Because there is always something to love from a transducer that can simultaneously render accurate bass, and properly judged vocals. Being able to deliver detail without compromise, yet not needing to die by being able to hear everything as its only asset. IE600 gets so much right without even trying, a veritable sweet spot everyone loves. The real significance of the 600 moniker, on show. Darko.Audio podcast · Sennheiser IE 900, IE 600 & IE 200: the what & the why Pairs of by-now standard 7mm TrueResponse drivers built in Wedemark, Germany, form IE600's beating heart. An acoustic back volume to the dynamic driver's rear, and dual resonator chambers to the front, give this the basis to perform.  Sennheiser unlock IE600's tuning potential from the drawing board, 7mm diameter small enough to climb in frequency without cone or modal break-up, while supplying it with enough air volume to move and manifest a long, slow bass wave with full authority. Moving up, IE600 wouldn't be a Sennheiser if it was without soundstage. So its dual resonator chambers D2CA manage airflow to your ear such that voices and instruments in a realistic headspace get delivered with solid images to your ear. Close your eyes, listen with your ears, and you're there at the venue. Delicately assembled in Ireland, these Sennheisers are built tough. The zirconium alloy IE600 is encased in has triple the hardness and flexural strength of high-performance steel: truly a space-age material found on the drill of the Mars Rover. A 4.4mm balanced cable comes in the package, ensuring your prized IE600 is ready for use up to its full potential immediately from our range of music players and portable DAC/amps. To rediscover your music through the newly-iconic IE600 is to invite you to listen to the IE300 and IE900 for different views into your tunes too. Benchmark AHB2 Power Amplifier

From a company revered for their digital audio technology, Benchmark Media launched an all-out assault on stereo speaker amplification with their AHB2 power amplifier. Taking Stereophile's Product of the Year 2018 gong, this up-to-480-watt per channel Class AB amplifier depends on THX feed-forward AAA technology to deliver the widest dynamic range plus lowest signal-noise ratio of power amplifiers on the market, measuring perfectly on AudioScienceReview. [See Product Desc. For More] StereoNET rightfully called AHB2 a "class act that delivers an awful lot at its price" before it went on to take the publication's coveted Applause Award. Whether run as a stereo or monoblock amp, it's guaranteed to get the job done in any rig you place it in. Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity used an entire system together with the DAC3 and HPA4 THX-888 pre-amp to declare "Benchmark provides a textbook case of how good (read: superb) things can come in small packages". It got the Gold Award on Soundnews. The hallmarks of building a great power amplifier are all present here, with the ultra-efficient switching power supply of AHB2 stably and quietly juicing the amplifier regardless of load, before outputting into a power stage with peerless damping factor. You'll also be able to see everything from Benchmark here, our other digital and Roon Ready streaming sources from Matrix Audio here, and all our other DAC & amp options here.

    ZMF Headphones Verite Closed

Managing the complicated acoustic design for the Vérité driver in a closed-back headphone may have been ZMF Headphones' toughest challenge to date. But the way they pulled it off with aplomb would have given little hint to that. Expect nearly all the Vérité's beryllium-coated transparency and detail in this closed model, with the benefits of privacy and isolation to boot. Positive Feedback were rendered "speechless at how you achieved the performance you achieved with these". [See Product Desc. For More] Its driver starts with a sandwich driver core of softer plastic PEN for effective damping at higher frequencies, this surface being coated with beryllium for the metal's stiffness, lightness and air acceleration properties.  That means Vérité Closed's driver moves as a perfect piston over all frequencies up to and above its working range, keeping distortion down due to cone and modal break-up. Audiophile Style compared the closed version against its open brethren, publishing a comprehensive study complete with measurements to conclude "they're as good as anything on the market today" and what "ZMF have achieved with the Vérité is truly remarkable". Stereophile's Herb Reichert says the "Vérités come closer to [Sony's] MDR-R10s in basic sonic character than any other headphones I've auditioned ... may even exceed Sony's cult classics in their illusion of speed and transparency". It's rightfully Headfonia's "best-of-the-best in the closed-back world". Make the headphone that made Stereophile's shortlist of Headphone Product of the Year 2020 yours today. Sennheiser IE200

EDC has a new name – Sennheiser's IE200. Taking IE600 and IE900's DNA to new heights of affordable excellence is Sennheiser's long-awaited entry-level earphone release, with performance exceeding its humble origins. It confidently takes StereoNET's Applause Award. And Headfonics praises IE200 for "this very competitive price point ... get a slice of their higher-end models". Pairs of by-now standard 7mm TrueResponse drivers form IE200's beating heart. And contemporary, exciting, bass and treble response disguises just how friendly its tuning is, for Sennheiser enabled owners to tune their pairs. Whether you're listening on your commute or monitoring with IE200, Sennheiser built in adjustable tuning profiles – by shifting eartip presentations one can enjoy bass reproduction of varying intensity in the same IEM! [See Product Desc. For More] Sennheiser are on a mission to expose the masses to great, balanced sound. Despite being the most affordable entry of the line-up, these German giants unlock IE200's potential from the drawing board. A polymer TrueResponse 7mm driver small and damped enough to climb in frequency without cone or modal break-up, while supplying it with enough air volume to move and manifest a long, slow bass wave with full authority, shows up as standard to give IE200 the basis to perform. Sennheiser apply cost-effective acoustic fleece in IE200's nozzle for much the same purpose as their dual and tri-chamber absorbers found in the IE600 and IE900. Expertly calculated damping material dials in treble performance for diffuse-field equalisation, great soundstage and fatigue-free highs without frequency peaks or troughs that cause masking. And IE200 hides its most unique tuning feature up its sleeve, for owners can position eartips at pre-determined lengths of the nozzle to expose an auxiliary bass vent Sennheiser snuck into the nozzle.  Fully-attached eartips sees IE200 default to type with tastefully emphasised bass and treble responses. But sliding them out exposes a vent that tunes down bass quantity, still maintaining the great low-frequency foundation Sennheiser birthed IE200 with – yet giving mid and high frequency detail even more room to shine. Darko.Audio podcast · Sennheiser IE 900, IE 600 & IE 200: the what & the why For those missing their Bluetooth wire-less, worry not – Sennheiser's high quality 3.5mm cable braided for strength and IE200's ergonomic excellence just enhances comfort. And convenience. Not to mention sound quality. Indeed, those who have made Bluetooth modus operandi and are looking for wired quality should make IE200 their first stop.
